Valdosta, Georgia is a vibrant and historic city in Lowndes County. Situated at the intersection of two major highways, I-75 and I-10, Valdosta is a convenient and picturesque destination for visitors from all over the world.
Valdosta’s history dates back to the early 19th century, when it was first established as the county seat of Lowndes County. The city was named after a former governor’s plantation home, “Val d’Aosta”, and has been a popular gathering place ever since.
Throughout the centuries, Valdosta has been a hub for agriculture, particularly cotton and tobacco, as well as nuts and pecans. When the boll weevil decimated cotton crops in the early 1900s, other crops rose in popularity, and Valdosta’s business district experienced tremendous growth. Valdosta is also home to many historic buildings, homes and districts, six of which are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. These include the Valdosta Commercial Historic District, Fairview, North Patterson, Brookwood North, Southside and East End. In addition to these districts, Valdosta City Hall, Sunset Hill Cemetery, the Lowndes County Courthouse, the Carnegie Library and the Crescent are also listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Valdosta is also known for its vibrant downtown area, which includes over 120 restaurants, shops, government agencies and churches. The city’s stately appearance has earned it repeat National Main Street Certifications and awards from the Georgia Downtown Association.
For those interested in learning more about Valdosta’s history, the city offers walking tours and tours of many of its historic homes. The Lowndes County Historical Society and Museum is also a great place to visit, as it collects and maintains research materials and interesting displays.
